Last night had been a strange evening for Robin as well. When he looked at the real Elise, he kept on thinking about the clone. This one spoke a great deal; it was surprising and really much of what the real Elise said was about nothing. It was important to find out as much as he could about her. What made her tick? Did things happen in her life to change her? Perhaps then he would understand the clone better.

When she talked, he watched her bright scarlet mouth with fascination as it opened and closed, then pulled into a smile. And then she was waiting for him to answer.

‘Sorry,’ he had said, looking away from her lips, ‘I was thinking about what you were saying. What were you saying?’

Her laughter was pretty.

‘You haven’t been listening to me at all, Robin; your mind is somewhere else. You’ve been thinking about that woman back at your house.’

To that, Robin smiled sadly. ‘She hasn’t been well,’ he shrugged.

It hurt Elise to know that he had been thinking about another woman when she was sitting opposite him, as it hurt her to know that wherever he was, he would always be thinking of this other woman.

By now she had figured out that Robin hadn’t much to do with females except that he wanted one in his life. She understood that, as she understood what a marvellous man he was and that she wished there were more like him. While Robin, sitting silently had the romantic idea that the young clone was busily studying, this idea which he must have found soothing.

When he looked at the real Elise while they were sitting in a polite restaurant, both playing with their salads, he began entertaining his thoughts that if she knew this girlfriend was a clone of her, what would she think?

‘What are you smiling at?’ the real Elise had caught him grinning.

‘I was just thinking that we are here while she is there in the house.’

‘Ah, you are worried that we are keeping secrets from her. I understand. Jealousy is an awful disease; it can be very contagious. I have to admit that I am a little jealous of your girlfriend now that I am on my own all the time. Did I tell you that Bertram rang me last night? That was a surprise, out of the blue. He sneaked the call, he said, something very big has gone on. An experiment they were working on, Moby’s experiment has escaped. Can you imagine that? The big Boss’ project has been got at. Bertram started saying something about trying to work out what happened to it when we were cut off and then the purr of the empty-line came on.’ She paused and rubbed her chin. ‘I’m not certain what is going on in the laboratory. You wouldn’t have any idea, I suppose. No, I thought not. If anyone told me that marrying a scientist implied danger, I wouldn’t have believed them.’

Waiting again with that same smile, she was looking at him for an answer, but Robin had no idea what to say to her.
